Frequently asked questions.
How do i place an order?
There are two ways to claim a Darkwater Fins tail:
Custom Tails:
You can request a custom design at any time through the Custom Tail Form on our website. Each piece is handcrafted to your specifications, from fluke shape to color palette. If commissions are open, you’ll be able to submit your request directly through the form. If they’re closed, the website will note it, and you can sign up for our newsletter to be notified when they reopen. We also announce new commission openings on social media.Darkwater Releases:
Throughout the year, we unveil limited-edition collections known as the Darkwater Releases. These tails are designed in-house and available only in small quantities. Once a release sells out, it never returns, making each one a true collector’s piece.
Whether you’re seeking a one-of-a-kind creation or waiting for a limited release to surface, joining our newsletter ensures you’ll always know when new designs become available.
What is the production timeframe for my tail?
Every Darkwater Fins tail is handcrafted from start to finish. Because of the detailed process, from printing to finishing, each piece requires time, precision, and care.
Production typically takes 12–16 weeks once your order is confirmed and materials are secured. This timeframe can vary depending on current order volume, seasonal demand, or the complexity of your design. We’ll keep you updated if your order requires additional time.
Limited-edition Darkwater Release tails follow the same timeframe, though shipping may begin sooner if the collection is produced ahead of launch.
You’ll receive an update when your tail enters production and another when it’s ready to ship. Please note that production time does not include shipping duration.
How do i care for my Darkwater Fins tail?
Each Darkwater Fins tail is a handcrafted piece of wearable art. Proper care will keep your tail looking and performing its best for years to come.
After Swimming:
Rinse your tail thoroughly in cool, fresh water after every use to remove chlorine, salt, and debris.
Lay flat or hang to dry completely out of direct sunlight. Avoid wringing or twisting the fabric.
General Care:
Avoid rough surfaces, sharp pool edges, and abrasive tiles, as these can damage the fabric or design.
Do not machine wash or tumble dry, gentle hand washing only.
Store your tail flat or rolled, never folded, in a cool, dry place away from heat or sunlight.
Long-Term Preservation:
Keep your tail away from harsh chemicals, oils, and sunscreen residue, which can break down the material.
For extended storage, ensure the tail is completely dry before packing to prevent moisture damage.
Are Darkwater Fins tails safe for swimming?
Yes, but only for confident, experienced swimmers.
Our tails are designed for use with compatible monofins and should never be used without one. Swimming in a mermaid tail requires strong swimming skills and should always be done under supervision, especially for minors.
Never attempt to swim in deep or open water unless you are fully trained, comfortable, and have a safety partner nearby. Safety always comes first, even in the depths.
What is your payment and deposit policy for custom tails?
All Darkwater Fins custom tails require a deposit to begin production. This deposit secures your spot in the creation queue and covers the initial design, materials, and setup for your custom piece.
The remaining balance is due once your tail design is complete and ready for production. You’ll receive design photos and final confirmation before the remaining payment is processed. Your order will not go into production until the full balance has been paid.
Payments are processed securely through our website. We currently accept major credit and debit cards, and offer financing options through our third-party partners when available.
Because each Darkwater Fins tail is made to your specifications, all custom orders are final sale and cannot be canceled or refunded once production has begun.
What is your refund and return policy?
All Darkwater Release tails are produced in limited quantities, making each one a rare collector’s piece. Because of this, refunds are handled with care and transparency.
You may request a refund or cancellation within 3 days of payment. After this 3-day window, all sales become final and refunds will only be authorized on a case by case basis.
Returns may be considered on a case-by-case basis and must be approved by Darkwater Fins prior to shipping the item back. Eligibility will depend on the condition of the product and the reason for the return.
We reserve the right to decline a return if the tail has been worn, damaged, altered, or used in water. Because of the nature of these handcrafted pieces, approved returns will be subject to inspection before any resolution is issued.
Custom tails are final sale and are not eligible for refunds or returns once production has begun.
How do i choose the right size and monofin for my tail?
Every Darkwater Fins tail is made to your measurements and your chosen fluke design. During the ordering process, you’ll provide your waist, hip, and length measurements to ensure a comfortable and secure fit.
Sizing:
Use a soft measuring tape and follow the measurement guide you are sent once you submit your custom order form
Tails are designed to fit snugly, as the fabric will relax slightly when wet.
Monofin Compatibility:
Each fluke shape has its own compatible monofin, clearly listed beneath the fluke name on the Custom Tail Form. This ensures you’ll know exactly which monofin is required for your chosen design before ordering.
Darkwater Fins tails are designed to fit several popular monofins, including the Finis Shooter and Finis Foil. Monofins are not included with your purchase unless otherwise stated, so please be sure to have or order the correct monofin prior to swimming.
If you’re unsure which fluke or monofin combination is best for you, our team is always happy to help, just reach out before placing your order.
